Air Conditioning, Power And The Internet.

Truely Blessed.

Truely Blessed.

Our modern world is blessed with many technologies that protect us from the depredations of inclement weather and allow for commerce and comfort in conditions that would otherwise bring human activity to a halt, but none are as important to industry and the comfort of modern life as air conditioning.

Just take the simple fact of reading this article on the internet. Many of the servers that hold all of the information contained in the World Wide Web are maintained and temperature controlled by air conditioning systems.

Internet giants like Microsoft, Apple and Facebook are tight-lipped about the energy resources power hungry processing systems require to function. And the reason for how quiet the industry is on this fact is due to how terribly inefficient the power usage for these servers really is. Most server farms get an efficiency of around 10%, although this can vary, with some large players claiming up to 50% efficiency.

Internet Search Giant Under Fire for Using too Much Energy In Keeping The Servers Cool!

Not so long ago in 2006 when Facebook had a mere 10 million users or so, the data servers operated in a 40ft x 60ft room and generated so much excess heat that employees of the company were sent to the local Wal-Marts to purchase fans and cooling systems just to keep the site up and running.

The world has changed considerably since then and Facebook went online with new servers in 2011. Located in Oregon, the server farm boasts recycling systems that re-use heated server air to warm the office space and low energy evaporative air conditioning systems to cool banks of servers. Facebook is still reticent about publishing efficiency details of these massive operations and whilst they are investing heavily in green and alternate energy systems it is unlikely to be much more than 50% efficient.

Smaller Servers

Must be kept cool!

Must be kept cool!

Other smaller companies that run 24 hour server banks and the accompanying air conditioning systems that ensure they keep operating, are not so progressive with power resources. Many smaller operators must keep diesel generators and banks of car batteries as a back up to prevent the loss of power and therefore service.

It is the fear of service loss that drives the reckless overconsumption of power and multiple redundancy systems. And why do companies fear service loss? It is the loss of traffic, and by extension it is the loss of advertising revenue derived from high traffic sites that has server managers quaking in fear.

They understand that if you and I, the general public, cannot get instant service from a site we take our interest, attention and money elsewhere.

So in other words it is us all wanting instant access to all of the information on the internets all the time that cause such a massive drain on resources and power.

Search For Energy Saving?

When we search for something and we are provided with hundreds of millions of options for our search in less than a second, this takes massive processing power, and all of the associated services that support this information infrastructure such as essential air conditioning systems.

Air conditioning allows us to have modern marvels such as high rise apartments, medical imaging technology and the internet, yet we barely register the cost on a personal level. I have sought to find an average carbon cost per Facebook click, but due to the dearth of information on the subject it is impossible to even speculate at a figure. Yet I hazard to say that the average Facebook user would consume as much carbon in a year as a short plane ride may not be too far from the truth.
